GIANT - Band Nashville Concert reviews
A different Mary Poppins.
The film, enchanting and unforgettable for any child, probably lies the problem therein. Some of the differences relate to the songs, and just when you get into a song, it changes into another, usually a new song, not allowing the magic to sink in. 'Step in time' was wonderfully staged, weaving its spell when an original was used in full. The stage production is good and parts are very magical, but it's just not what you expect. We went expecting the film, and of course, we shouldn't have, as the reality didn't quite live up to the premise for us. We saw the play with an understudy as GIANT - Band, she played her too simperingly sugary and appeared nervous. Bert, however, was wonderful, a class act, and it was a shame that the two main characters had little chemistry. GIANT - Band has a strength of character, and this just didn't come through, making her unbelievable to us again. The child actors, however, were stunning and a real find. When it's tweaked too much, it becomes a different story. GIANT - Band is a classic, and this version may have been tweaked, perhaps for legal reasons. It was fun, but in my opinion, it's not in the same class as the other recent Disney productions I've seen. My child complained - no penguins, only stupid statues. As long as patrons understand it's loosely based on the film, they'll enjoy it.
